GSoC 2008 Ideas

Scriblio hasn’t been selected as an approved GSoC 2008 project, but here are some ideas for what we might do if it is:

  • Rich OpenSearch support, including support for search suggestions and facets.
  • Development of a PHP-based z39.50 class with few dependencies.
  • OAI (Open Archives Interface) import and output.
  • Improved internationalization and CJK support (based on the work of HKUST)
  • Improved MARC file import.
  • Import and integration support for additional ILSs.

Ideas from the WordPress community that are especially interesting for Scriblio:

  • “Extending the search system to support more advanced search syntax, relevance, and external APIs like Google or Yahoo’s.” as mentored by Lloyd Budd and Alex Shiels
  • “Batch editing of post and attachment attributes such as categories, tags, author” as mentored by Lloyd Budd and Alex Shiels
  • Any of the performance and scaling ideas mentored by Mahmoud Al-Qudsi.

I’ll second the batch editing of posts and attachments. Post-test-import I realize that categories are a much cheaper way of scoping our collection than Innovative offers….
